SOL sat down to chat with Roman based floral designer Dylan Tripp. Dylan spoke to SOL about his reinvention from the world of fashion to the world of floral design, his creative process and what inspires him daily in the Eternal City. Dylan not only offers floral design but creates special arrangements for site-specific events as well as flower classes in his gorgeous studio in Via Monserrato Rome. You can swoon over his gorgeous creations on Instagram @dylantripp and find out more about his latest projects on the official website here.
It has always been part of my life since I was little. I was quite a lonely child and would often create my own fantastic worlds to keep me company.
Never! It was definitely not a thing that a had in my mind! I was more into fashion (which was my first passion) and I actually worked in the industry for many years. However at a certain point in my life I had a big change in my work and I decided to reinvent myself. I went back in my mind to my childhood, when I used to explore nature, walking in the woods with my grandparents. And I got close to that moment and feeling and I understood that this is what I wonted to do! Working with Nature, using the tools she gives to us in order to create something beautiful.
Aesthetics to me is something that I use as an anxiolytic ! Beauty helps me as a therapeutic moment in my life. That's why working with flowers is like a yoga session for me in a way! When I am in front of my flowers, I love the sensation of calmness, concentration and beauty I receive. And I also love to be inspired by things not necessarily connected to the flower world: music, dance, the club scene, old Hollywood musicals, Fellini, and of course the tons of art I am surrounded by here in Italy and Europe in general.
I always start by doing a lot of visual research on what inspires me regarding a certain mood I was given for that specific work. And then a start working on my moodboard. A big focus point is colour- a good colour palette can change everything!

As I mentioned previously, totally! And not only the Beauty though. Roma is a city full of contradictions, where Ugly and Beautiful are often mixed together. Rome can give you the unexpected, in both a good (overwhelming Art everywhere) and bad way ( a certain neglect and carelessness she has). But in the end everything has a place and everything is inspiring.
I am working on something I hope next year will see done! It is a personal project, that involves my work and the Italian Design and Craft. But I don't want to say too much yet! ;-)

I would like to keep working as I have been, but also explore a more artistic approach to flowers, using them as a tool in order to create site-specific works, not only arrangements for weddings and events.

That's a tough one! It is hard to choose only one because all my works are an expression of the moment I was creating them. However I would definitely say that all my creations where there has been a strong attention to the colour palette encapsulate my essence!
